my summer knitting projects
Typically, when I think of knitting projects, I think cozy sweaters, warm scarves, and winter beanies. I definitely did NOT think of anything summer-friendly, until I found knitting patterns for tank tops.
This summer, I’m working on two knitting projects. The first is the Summer Secret Crop, a free pattern on Ravelry by Jessie Maed Designs. The second is Camisole No. 5 by My Favourite Things, which is $8 for the pattern.
Both of these tank top patterns use two skeins of yarn, so they are perfect stash buster projects for all the yarn you probably have lying around. If you’re anything like me, you definitely have yarn that has been sitting in a chest for a few years, wondering if it will ever see the light of day.
knitting the summer secret crop
So far, knitting the Summer Secret Crop has been very simple, except for a small mishap when I first started the project. I misinterpreted the instructions for the bust increase rows, and knit them all at once, instead of one increase row every inch. Other than that, it’s been smooth sailing. I just finished knitting the body and am about to start working on the chest shaping.
pattern difficulty: the summer secret crop is an easy knitting pattern, perfect for a beginner knitter. It’s a great knitting pattern to practice the Old Norwegian Cast-On method, which gives a stretchy finish. It is also a good pattern for practicing increases, as there are knit increases but they aren’t in every row.
knitting the camisole no 5
Camisole no 5 is made in a 2x2 rib, and with a provisional cast-on. Once again, I did have a small mishap. If you are a more experienced knitter, you will know that when you increase stitches, you can either do your increase knit-wise or purl-wise. The camisole no 5 involves both types of increases, and I think at one point I did a couple purl-wise increases when I should have done knit-wise increases.
That being said, I fixed the ribbing pattern after a few rows, and although I’m able to notice the mistake, I think most people won’t be able to tell.
pattern difficulty: camisole no 5 is more of an intermediate knitting pattern, as you do have to pay attention to the ribbing while you are knitting, and there are increases every other row in the beginning. It is a great pattern for practicing provisional cast-on, and for practicing knitting 2x2 rib.
which pattern am I most excited about?
While I am excited about both knitting projects, I think I’m the most excited about Camisole No 5. I’m knitting it with a fun, neon-y rainbow yarn, and it’s coming together so quickly.
Make sure to check back at the end of the summer to see the finished tank tops!
